WHAT IS NET NEUTRALITY? AND WHY SHOULD YOU CARE ABOUT IT?

From quite some time, we all have been hearing about Net Neutrality and it's multiple-sided opinion rise on Facebook as well as Twitter.

But for basic users like us, what does it actually means?

Let's take a look at it.

Net Neutrality

It is the Principle that all the Data on the internet should be treated equally and should not be discriminated on the basis of user, content, website, platform, application, etc.

In Simple Words, Net Neutrality states that all the data on the Internet should be treated equally.

In most of the cases, Net Neutrality is targeted for ISPs (Internet Service Providers). As most of the discrimination (if any) is done by them.

But What is this Discrimination all about?

It can anything ranging from charging high prices for selected services to blocking or slowing down specific data requests by users only or specifically on the base their Platform or their content, etc.

Take for example, A Service Provider might charge you $20 a month for using Netflix while the same charges you with about $8.99 a month for using Facebook while both of these have same data limit but still there prices are very different just because of the website/application you are using.

So it's safe to conclude that either the ISP does not like Netflix or it like Facebook too much!

For another example, Consider that an ISP charges you $185 for 30 GB of data per month in (let's say) Austin (Texas) while the same charges you around $165 for 30 GB of data per month in (let's say) Atlanta (Georgia).

It's pretty obvious that the ISP is looting those who live in Austin.

The Good Side of Net Neutrality

In practical scenarios (not all but only some), Net Neutrality proves to be a good thing.

For example, After it has been implemented, you will pay equally for everything and most of the internet-based discrimination (if not all) will stop.

Plus you can then freely enjoy all services at the same price whether it be high or low (it won't matter then).

So now you can play your Xbox games on full multiplayer, having to pay the same price as you would pay for watching movies on Netflix or using your Cloud Services without any form of discrimination.

The Bad side of Net Neutrality

Most of you would have surely thought Net Neutrality as a good thing but it has a bad side too.

For example, if you want your internet plan solely for gaming and watching movies or for sole Business stuff, why should you even pay for all the other things included in your plan?

This will waste your money on unnecessary things you don't actually need.

Although it is not the only thing bad about Net Neutrality but for the sake of simplicity, it is here only.

But I have provided other Links where you can learn about Net Neutrality and it's sides.
